I heart Helen Fielding

Have just re-read Bridget Jones's Diary, and am reminded how outrageously clever it is. Read it immediately after revisiting Pride and Prejudice (read that in 4 hours-- a new personal record), and was struck by the way Fielding graciously parallels her story on the original. I'm having one of those phases where I'm obsessed with reading modern stuff and then going back to the text it's modeled after/based on.

Fielding turns Wickham, the ne'er-do-well and arch-enemy of Mr. Darcy, into two characters: one who's preying on Bridget, one who's preying on Bridget's mom. So smart! So hilarious!

Why can't there be newspaper or magazine book reviews of books that are just discovered or re-discovered, instead of only reviewing books that have come out within the past three months?

Maybe you should be the first to start new reviews on older titles. Who knows? You might even get a publisher to back you. Just be sure to ask for royalties!

I think Tin House has a section called "Lost and Found" in which people review obscure/overlooked books (and not necessarily recent ones either). I'm not certain, and it's been a while since I've flipped through an issue, but you should check it out.
